Tvt Records Sells For 6 Million

LATEST: New York-based music label TVT Records has been sold to digital music company The Orchard for $6 million (GBP3 million).

TVT Records - home to artists including the Ying Yang Twins, The Polyphonic Spree, Pitbull and Lil' Jon - sparked fears of a complete closure after the label axed staff and applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February (08).

The independent label succumbed to its financial difficulties and has now been sold off for $6.05 million (GBP3.025 million) to worldwide music distributor The Orchard in a deal which expected to close next month (03Jul08).

Under the terms of the purchase, The Orchard will take control of TVT's catalogue and artist contracts.

The Orchard bosses have denied claims they are already on the look out to sign new artists, fuelling reports the firm will focus instead on looking after the disgruntled musicians already on the roster.

Rapper Pitbull accused TVT bosses of not doing enough to promote his album The Boatlift earlier this year (08) - and urged his fans not to purchase the LP.

The company was founded by Steve Gottlieb, who launched the label out of his New York City apartment in 1985. At its height, TVT was considered one of the top independent record labels in the United States.

Belfast's Vital Festival Cancelled Because Of 'Festival Saturation'

Ben Affleck becoming a TV reporter

Actor and director Ben Affleck will have a very unusual role on US television next week.
Reuters reports that Affleck has travelled to eastern Congo to report for the ABC news programme 'Nightline'.
Writing on the ABC website, Affleck said that he wanted to draw attention to the starvation, violence and disease people face there.
He said: "It makes sense to be sceptical about celebrity activism. There is always the suspicion that involvement with a cause may be doing more good for the spokesman than he or she is doing for the cause."
But the star said he hoped viewers could separate his involvement from "what is unimpeachably important about this segment: the plight of eastern Congo".
Affleck approached the show about doing the report.

Woman to be tried for stalking John Cusack

A woman charged with stalking actor John Cusack has been ordered to stand trial by a judge in Los Angeles.
Emily Leatherman was arrested outside the Hollywood star's home in Malibu, California last March and charged with stalking the actor.
The 33-year-old is facing up to three years in prison if she is found guilty on one count of felony stalking.
She will also face one charge of failing to obey a restraining order and one of petty theft.
Each of the charges carries a maximum sentence of six months imprisonment.
'Grosse Pointe Blank' star Cusack was granted a temporary restraining order against Leatherman in 2006.
The order stated that Leatherman must stay at least 500 feet away from him, his home, his work, his car and offices or companies in which he does business.
Leatherman was also arrested last year outside Tom Cruise's home, also on suspicion of violating a restraining order.
